City of Glendale’s Mayor: “what would life be like with no team in the arena?”

Just because True North has found their team and brought the NHL back to Winnipeg, the Coyotes situation in Arizona still hasn’t been magically solved for the league. Potential owner Matthew Hulsizer dropped his bid to buy the struggling franchise on June 27 and the league has not publically announced any new potential suitors. There have been rumors of Jerry Reinsdorf (yet again) and even a new “mystery buyer,” but still no concrete, public offers to classify anyone as the front-runner.

AHL approves Sabres owner Terry Pegula’s purchase of Rochester Americans

AP

It might be safe to refer to Friday, June 24 as Nostalgia Day in the hockey world.

First, we have the return of the Winnipeg Jets. Then there’s Eric Brewer signing a four-year deal worth about $16 million, which is a nearly identical contract to the one he agreed to in 2007. Ryan Smyth seems primed to play NHL hockey for a team in Alberta again as well (although it sounds like he might be a member of the Calgary Flames rather than Edmonton Oilers).

Kings and Blue Jackets excited about their blockbuster trades with Flyers

Former Flyers Mike Richards and Jeff Carter were both shocked by the trades this afternoon. Richards said he first heard of his trade on the internet, while Carter’s agent explained that the Philadelphia organization repeatedly assured him his client would not be moved. Whether or not the star centers were prepared for change, one thing that’s for sure is their both of their new teams are ecstatic with their newest acquisitions.

AP

The NHL announced that its Board of Governors officially approved the relocation of the Atlanta Thrashers franchise to Winnipeg today. Voting for new Quebec arena deal won’t come until fall, putting NHL future on hold

With the Atlanta Thrashers’ relocation to Winnipeg just about complete, the attention of many people who hope to see more Canadian NHL teams shifted to Quebec City. It only makes sense to look there since they lost their Quebec Nordiques to Colorado much like the Winnipeg Jets jettisoned to Phoenix, after all.

Drive to 13 complete: Winnipeg season tickets sell out in 17 minutes

AP

To little surprise, the Drive to 13,000 season ticket holders was completed once tickets became available to the general public today. The more amazing part was the rapid speed in which it happened: Winnipeg fans reportedly only took 17 minutes to scoop up the 5,842 (or so) tickets that remained.

Drive To 13 update: Winnipeg more than halfway to goal with general sale starting tomorrow

AP

We had an update on how ticket sales were going in Winnipeg earlier today showing that over 4,000 season tickets were sold after just two days of being available as part of a presale before being opened up to the general public on Saturday. While that number was more than impressive, the “Drive To 13″ update this evening was even more encouraging to the fans in Winnipeg looking to impress the NHL and guarantee the Board of Governors approval to sell the Atlanta Thrashers to True North and move the team to Canada.
